There is one large problem when trying to write a review of a Kaki King show. The problem, is that you can’t really describe what it is that Kaki does that is so brilliant to watch and of course to listen to. The art of enjoying Kaki King is in seeing her, not reading about her.
Known for her incredible/fast/skillful guitar playing, her new album ‘Dreaming Of Revenge’ is probably her most accessible to date with even the instrumental tracks sounding like the backgrounds to great pop songs. Starting off the show with a wine toast in honor of a personal anniversary (her first ever show in San Francisco was at the Great American Music hall and now she was playing to a sold out venue) Kaki immediately came off as extremely humble for someone so talented and revered in all circles - definitely a like-able woman.
The new single ‘Pull Me Out Alive’ was received well by the all-ages crowd, a sign of the imminent success coming her way, and my favourite instrumental off of the album - ‘Montreal’ was full of energy but still possessed a subtlety that the album so perfectly captures.
With a fantastic backing band (special mention must go to the mental - in a good way, drummer) and sounding on point herself even for a recovering flu sufferer, Kaki King really is about putting on a great musical spectacle. So maybe go youtube her, see her play live if you can, but watch her play and listen to her new record - both things you won’t want to miss.
